Bookworm's Late Lunch
Date & Location
About The Event
“No man is an island; Every Book is a World” – The sign above the door of Island Books on Alice Island
I’ve been a keen reader all my life and set up a book club in Didsbury with some friends over a dozen years ago to give us something to talk about other than our children. We are still going strong even with said babies starting university this year. The book club has given us something to focus on and look forward to and 2020 saw us conducting it on zoom, in gardens and parks, often with me lugging cakes and flasks of mulled wine around south Manchester.
When Suzanne asked me to co-host this event and choose a book to read I knew I wanted to choose a book that was thought provoking but accessible and a fun, heart-warming read to lift and hug us throughout what may be a difficult winter. A book for people who love and find comfort in books. I failed to draw any inspiration from the current bestsellers list and I kept being drawn back to something I had read and fallen in love with a few years ago –
The Storied Life of A J Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin.
AJ is a young but curmudgeonly bookseller, struggling to come to terms with the death of his wife, whose life is transformed by a discovery in his bookshop. We follow how this brings him out of his self imposed isolation and how he emerges from the darkness of grief through literature, love and friendship to embrace brighter days. It’s one of those books that leaves you sad to finish and I cannot wait to revisit AJ in his charming little shop on Alice Island with you all in February over a delicious late lunch delivered safely to your doorstep.
Late Lunch Menu
Winter Vegetable + Bulgar Wheat Pie Slice
Rooted Slaw + Green Salad with Citrus Dressing
Spiced Pear + Apple Compote with Creamy Yoghurt
Our book group will run like this;
Please purchase your book from whichever online bookseller you prefer.
We will meet online via zoom at 2.30 pm on Saturday afternoon with our late lunch, remember to reheat your pie slice if you’d prefer it hot. We will gather over lunch while Julia gives us a brief outline of the book and why she has chosen it.
We will discuss why the bookseller is struggling to come to terms with the death of his wife and feels the need to isolate himself.
We will explore grief, love and friendship and what transforms us in times of sorrow.
We will look at the characters within the book, those we warm to and those we don’t.
Anyone who would like to read a passage that they particularly enjoyed will have the opportunity.
We will pause to brew our cup of tea and plate up our cinnamon bun and compote before we gather back to continue our discussion further.
We will conclude our book group at 4 pm - perhaps organising another for later in the year.
We will deliver your Late Lunch contact free to your door between 10 and 11am on Saturday 13th Febrauary to the following areas of Manchester - Didsbury, the Heatons, Withington, Fallowfield, Chorlton, Stretford, Old Trafford, Salford, Sale, Altrincham, Hale, Bowdon and Monton.
